WHY CHOOSE SCORESBY SUND
AN ADVENTURE, MORE RAW, MORE SOLITARY, MORE RARE
Scoresby Sund is a unique territory. With over 350 kilometres long and multiple arms that plunge deep into the ice cap, it is thelargest fjord in the world. Here, no ports, no roads — just one inhabited village over hundreds of kilometres of coastline.
Choosing Scoresby Sund means accepting a rhythm dictated by light, weather, and ice. It is to navigate between towering icebergs, walk on the tundra where musk oxen graze, and observe ringed seals on the drifting ice.
- The largest fjord system in the world
- Musk oxen, Arctic hares, foxes
- Calving glaciers of the Stauning Alps
- Ittoqqortoormiit, a village at the end of the world
- A unique seasonal window of a few days
- Flexible itinerary, dictated by ice and weather
"Where Disko Bay offers accessible discovery, Scoresby Sund provides a more engaged, raw, and solitary adventure."

WHAT MAKES SCORESBY
THE ESSENCE OF EACH STOP
Three complementary dimensions that strengthen this adventure cruise in Greenland.

The largest fjord in the world
Navigating in Scoresby means moving between cliffs of 1,500 metres and icebergs so massive that they become landscapes in their own right. Røde Ø, Bjørneøer, Øfjord, Harefjord: many arms to explore depending on ice conditions, in a late summer light that transforms every hour of the day.

Musk oxen and terrestrial wildlife
Unlike Disko or the Lofoten Islands, Scoresby is a land where terrestrial wildlife takes precedence. Musk oxen, Arctic hares, and polar foxes can be observed during landings. Seals, narwhals, and seabirds punctuate the navigation.

Ittoqqortoormiit, a village at the end of the world
A stop in the most isolated Inuit village in Greenland. 350 inhabitants, colourful houses facing the ocean, a culture still linked to sledding and hunting. A simple and precious human encounter, in a place where tourism has not taken the place of local life.

ARCTIC WILDLIFE
LES RENCONTRES QUI FONT SCORESBY
La côte est du Groenland est l'une des dernières régions où la faune terrestre arctique s'observe dans un environnement presque intact.

Musk ox
Almost systematic during landings at Harefjord

Ringed seal
On drifting ice, common during navigation

Polar bear
Resident population — rare and precious observation

Narwhal
Possible at Vikingebugt — one of the few accessible destinations

Arctic hare
Common during land walks

Sailing glacier
Stauning Alps — a permanent spectacle from the fjord

ON BOARD THE SHIP
LIFE ON BOARD: SLOW PACE, TOTAL FLEXIBILITY
From the moment of boarding at Constable Pynt, the pace changes. The Tarmo enters Scoresby and does not leave until the return. The sea, the ice, and the light become the only markers of the journey.
No fixed programme: each day is built according to the weather, the state of the ice, and the opportunities of the moment. Navigation between icebergs, landings by zodiac, walks on the tundra, or simple observation from the deck alternate according to the conditions.
The Tarmo offers individual cabins with private bathrooms, a sauna, a cosy lounge, and a well-prepared kitchen. In the evening, discussions continue under the sunset or, later, under the first northern lights.
A typical day
- Weather and ice briefing over coffee
- Navigation 2 to 4 hours to the day's anchorage
- Landing by zodiac — beach or glacier tongue
- Guided walk of 3 to 5 hours or wildlife observation from the shore
- Return on board, lunch or snack depending on the schedule
- Second outing possible or contemplative navigation
- Dinner on board, exchanges with the crew
- Night watch: auroras or icebergs under the moon

Frequently asked questions
No maritime skills are required. The cruise is aimed at travellers in good physical condition, comfortable with Arctic weather, capable of 3 to 5 hour walks on uneven terrain. The east coast of Greenland is a remote area: one must accept demanding logistics and a degree of itinerary flexibility.
Boarding takes place at Constable Pynt (Nerlerit Inaat), accessible only by flight from Iceland (Reykjavík or Akureyri).
Scoresby Sund is home to a resident population of polar bears, but sightings remain rare and unpredictable. Musk oxen, on the other hand, are almost always observed during landings. Our approach remains one of respectful observation from a distance.
The east coast of Greenland is ice-free for only a few weeks each year, usually from mid-August to mid-September. Before this, sea ice prevents navigation; after, the freeze takes hold again. This natural constraint also contributes to the rarity of the destination.
Temperatures between −2 °C and +8 °C depending on the days, frequent winds, possible precipitation in the form of rain or light snow. Comfort largely depends on the equipment: we provide you with a detailed checklist at the time of booking.
Yes, this is a major feature of navigation in Scoresby. The captain adjusts the route according to the ice, wind, and observation opportunities. This flexibility is essential for a successful adventure in the polar region — and often the source of the most beautiful surprises.
