Join Escales Polaires, a French company specialising in adventure cruises in the Arctic.
We operate small exploration vessels (24–30 m) that navigate along the Norwegian coasts and around Spitsbergen.
Our ambition is simple: to offer authentic adventure trips, on a human scale, close to the polar landscapes.
In this context, we are looking for aMechanical Engineer / Secondcapable of taking charge of all the technical systems of the ship and actively participating in navigation operations.
You will join the crew of theIsbjørnen II, a 24 m adventure vessel operating in Spitsbergen and along the Norwegian coast.
Your Role: The Heart of the Expedition
This position is mainly machine-oriented.
In an isolated Arctic environment, the technical reliability of the ship is essential. You are responsible for the proper functioning of the mechanical and technical systems on board.
At the same time, you participate in navigation and bridge operations alongside the captain.
You will be part of asmall versatile crew, where teamwork and autonomy are essential.
Engineering / Machine (main role)
Maintenance and monitoring of the main engine
Maintenance and supervision of the generators
Maintenance of the technical systems on board:
electrical installations
pumps
hydraulic systems
Diagnosis and repair of mechanical or technical faults
Implementation of the preventive maintenance programme
Management of spare parts and technical consumables
Navigation and bridge operations
Assistance to the captain for navigation and watches
Participation in port manoeuvres
Driving and maintenance of Zodiacs
Logistical support during landings and operations ashore
These operations may include landings in remote areas and adventure activities.

Desired profile
We are primarily looking fora technical, independent and resourceful sailor.
You are capable of solving mechanical problems in isolated environments where resources are limited.
Skills & Experience
- Strong skills inmarine mechanics and technical systems
- Ability to diagnose and resolve faults independently
- Experience onworkboats, fishing vessels or expedition vesselsappreciated
- Team spirit and adaptability
- Good level inFrench and English(communication on board)
Desired qualifications
Engineering CoC
Yachtmaster or Master < 200 GT
CertificatesValid STCW
Experience in navigation in remote or polar areas appreciated
Non-negotiable human qualities
Humility in the face of the elements and others.
Absolute calm in crisis situations.
Strong sense of service and hospitality.
Ability to live in a small community for several months.
